The United States men’s Olympic hockey team won 2-1 in a thrilling overtime finale on Sunday, capturing the nation’s third gold medal in Winter Olympic history.
Jack Hughes became Team USA’s instant hero, scoring the game’s winning goal in OT, after having several teeth knocked out on an earlier high-sticking penalty from Canada. With that, American spectators roared in unison as the United States put on a superior performance at the highest level.
Some of those spectators were in Milano Cortina, Italy, to watch the game in person, including gold medalist Mikaela Shiffrin and NFL legend Tom Brady. Olympic legend Scott Hamilton was also present at the Olympic Games, often providing his thoughts and reactions to various figure skating events.

Hamilton reacted to various performances, including Alysa Liu’s gold medal in the women’s individual figure skating event.
After Sunday’s exciting overtime victory, he was among those sending a strong message to congratulate and celebrate Team USA’s win.
“What a WIN for Team USA Hockey!! On the 46th anniversary of the Miracle on Ice, USA defeats Canada in OT. Their first Gold Medal since the 1980 Olympic Games. Congratulations to you all!” Hamilton wrote in his message on his official Instagram.
Hamilton is one of many Olympic legends and medalists who have been present to support and cheer on American athletes during these recent Milano Cortina Olympics.
In addition, figure skating stars Tara Lipinski, Johnny Weir, and Brian Boitano have all been over in Italy for the events.
Team USA featured a star-studded collection of NHL stars, including Jack Hughes, Auston Matthews, Brady Tkachuk, Matthew Tkachuk, and Connor Hellebuyck.
The United States struck first, with a Matt Boldy breakaway goal early in the first period. However, Canada eventually tied things up on a Cale Makar goal in the second period. Neither team could break the tie in the third, forcing the 3-on-3 sudden-death overtime situation.
Jack Hughes ultimately scored the winner just under two minutes in overtime, following in the footsteps of his brother, Quinn Hughes, who kept the dream of winning gold alive with his OT goal in the quarterfinals.
