Silent Hill Fans Treated to First Look at New Game in Silent Hill Transmission Livestream

Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek’s network of contributors

Konami just wrapped up its half-hour Silent Hill Transmission livestream, giving fans a first look at the next game in the legendary horror series, Silent Hill f.

The presentation opened with a new trailer for Silent Hill f, showing the new locale – a Japanese town in the 1960s – and a few details of the story. Silent Hill f will follow Shimizu Hinako, a schoolgirl from the fictional regional Japanese town of Ebisugaoka, as her town is consumed by the series’ signature fog. She’s confronted with all sorts of horrors, including terrifying mannequin-like creatures, a flowery monster, and some pretty gnarly effects.

Following the showing of the trailer, Silent Hill producer Motoi Okamoto and Silent Hill f writer Ryukishi07 – best known for his work on the When They Cry series – took a deep dive into the creative forces behind the game. According to the duo, Silent Hill f’s main theme is “find the beauty in terror,” which they say is a common theme in Japanese horror. Konami apparently felt that prior games in the Silent Hill series had become too focused on Western themes, so they wanted to focus harder on the Japanese elements of the series by setting a game entirely in Japan, with a heavy focus on Japanese horror and iconography.

Here’s the official synopsis for Silent Hill f:

Shimizu Hinako was living her life as an ordinary teenager. That is, until her town is suddenly shrouded in fog and begins to change in a horrific way. Now, she must explore a town she no longer recognizes while solving puzzles, fighting strange enemies, and doing everything she can to survive… in order to face the ultimate decision that she must make. This is a tale about a beautiful yet terrifying choice.

Akira Yamaoka, a longtime composer for the series, has been brought on to compose new tracks for the game, specifically the “Fog World” sections, while Kensuke Inage, who’s worked on games like Dynasty Warriors and Tekken 8, will be composing the “Otherworld” sections of the game. Ryukishi07 collaborators Dai and Xaki will also be composing new tracks for the game, something that’s sure to delight When They Cry fans.

Creature and character designer Kera released a statement shown in the presentation, talking about the challenges of creating something new but still familiar:

“I love the Silent Hill series, and it’s been a big influence on me,” Kera said. “In particular, I am constantly remembering Silent Hill 2, and the messages on the walls, the music, and the monster designs. So, when it came to Silent Hill f, and bringing the setting to Japan, we had to come up with something that felt just a little different, and I had to really think about how to get that feeling. The monster designs were the hardest. I had to consider everything that’s come in Silent Hill before, and figure out how to take this game in a different direction, but still be Silent Hill. It might not be the exact same blood-smeared, rusting scenery, but I sincerely hope you’ll enjoy our vision and the world we’ve created.”

No gameplay was show during the trailer or presentation, nor was a release date for Silent Hill f revealed, but it was announced that Silent Hill f will be available on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam, Epic Games Store, and Microsoft Store, where it’s available to wishlist now. Notably, the Xbox and Microsoft Store versions of the game are part of the Xbox Play Anywhere program, meaning players on those platforms can buy it on either platform and play it on the other without having to buy it a second time.
