Kraven The Hunter marks the end of the Sony Spider-Man universe (SSU). In this feature let’s take a look and see how it stacks up to Sony’s previous villain-centric releases.
The SSU kicked off in 2018 with Venom. The first live-action film to centre on the brain-eating fiend, it stars Tom Hardy as reporter Eddie Brock who’s plagued by an alien parasite that gives him shape-shifting powers.
While not part of Marvel’s cinematic universe, subsequent sequels teased Venom’s existence in Spider-Man’s world. The post-credits scene for 2021’s Venom: Let There Be Carnage showed Brock watching Tom Holland’s Spider-Man on TV, for instance. They never actually meet, however.

Morbius followed in 2022, again teasing plotlines that would never come to pass. It follows Jared Leto’s doctor who, in attempting to cure his disease, inflicts himself with vampirism. The post-credits scene introduces Michael Keaton’s Vulture, last seen in Spider-Man Homecoming, who’s plotting a comeback. That setup doesn’t look likely to resolve any time soon.
Madame Web came in 2023, drawing the lowest review scores in SSU history. The story of a Manhattan paramedic who gains the power to see into the future was widely panned for wooden performances and an underwhelming plot.
Earlier this year Venom: The Last Dance concluded Hardy’s trilogy, cementing it as by far Sony’s biggest success. And most recently, Kraven the Hunter released, dragging back down the aggregate with poor reviews almost on par with Madame Web and Morbius.
