Southwest Airlines To Scrap Major Perk
Ross D. Franklin/AP
Southwest Airlines is set to start charging for checked bags for the first time in its history.
The change will be implemented for the vast majority of passengers starting May 28, the airline said on Tuesday.
However, elite frequent flyers with “A-List Preferred” status will still receive two free checked bags, while A-List members will get one. Additionally, Southwest credit card holders will be entitled to one free checked bag.
Bob Jordan, the CEO of Southwest, said in a statement: “We have tremendous opportunity to meet current and future customer needs, attract new customer segments we don’t compete for today, and return to the levels of profitability that both we and our shareholders expect.”
This is a breaking story. More to follow.
