Speaker: Hungary appreciates Egypt being a stable state in an unstable region

House Speaker László Kövér said Hungary appreciates Egypt being “a stable state with consolidated security in an unstable region”.

During talks with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi in Cairo on Sunday, Kövér highlighted “the crucial importance of Egypt’s moderate voice” in terms of preventing a broader regional conflict and promoting ceasefire talks. Both Hungary and Egypt have an interest in “preserving the achievements of a regional consolidation process interrupted by the Middle Eastern conflict”, Kover said.

The talks also touched upon the impacts of the war in Ukraine as well as bilateral economic ties.

Kövér visited Egypt at the invitation of his counterpart, Hanafy El Gebaly, who referred to ties between the two countries as “based on mutual respect and traditional values”. At their talks, Kover assured his host of Hungary’s continued support to Egypt at international forums, including ties with the European Union.

“We unconditionally support Egypt and encourage countries of the EU to follow suit so that Egypt can retain its current stability and continue to act as a counterbalancing force in North Africa,” Kövér said.

The two speakers voiced agreement concerning the importance of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean in maintaining parliamentary ties between the EU and Egypt, of which Egypt is currently the president.
