Stanford General Manager Andrew Luck Makes Major First Move by Firing Head Coach
Andrew Luck, a former first-overall pick out of Stanford for the Indianapolis Colts, made his first major move as his alma mater’s general manager Tuesday, firing head coach Troy Taylor.
Stanford has struggled to find the success that it had with Luck as the quarterback over the past six seasons, amassing no more than four wins each season.
Right after Luck left for the NFL, the team did manage some great seasons, but things have gone downhill since, with the team firing Taylor after just two seasons with a combined six wins.
After being in the Pac-12 for so long, this past season was the football program’s first season in the ACC conference, which brought no changes to their overall record despite the drastic shift in opponents.
Taylor originally took over for previous head coach David Shaw in 2023 after two 3-9 seasons of his own.
Luck was named general manager back in November of 2024, marking this move as his first major one as a key program decision-maker.
He spent three seasons with the team in college, finishing second in Heisman voting twice, finishing behind Cam Newton in 2010 and Robert Griffin III in 2011.

Luck was also stellar in the NFL, which made his early retirement at the age of 29 shocking. The main reason was he never seemed to have good protection, leading to numerous injuries.
His retirement was a huge shock to the system for NFL fans, especially to Colts fans, where he played his entire career.
Luck will now look to hire a new head coach for the program, a key move that will likely mark how successful his tenure as general manager will be for years to come.
However, given his experience both with Stanford and as an NFL quarterback, and still being only 35 years old, Luck seems like the perfect person to lead the revival attempt of the Stanford football program.
He knows the program really well, he knows what it takes to play football at a high level, he knows what the transition from college to pros is like, and he understands the mental and physical toll football can have on young athletes.
If anyone can find the right guy to lead a group of young men at Stanford, it seems like Luck is the perfect guy to do so.
While firing the head coach is never a good sign, with Andrew Luck running the program and making key decisions — Stanford seems to be in good hands and could make a big turnaround sooner rather than later.
