Steelers Sign Former First-Round Pick CJ Henderson
The Pittsburgh Steelers made a potentially savvy roster addition on Wednesday, adding former first-round pick defensive back C.J. Henderson to the team’s practice squad.
Henderson was selected with the ninth overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft by the Jacksonville Jaguars. He hasn’t been able to live up to his potential yet, but will hope to do so with a strong Pittsburgh team and coaching staff.
Henderson spent a little more than one season with the Jaguars from 2020-21. He appeared in 10 games, securing 44 tackles, six pass deflections, and one interception. In late Sept. 2021, Henderson was traded to the Carolina Panthers along with a fifth-round pick for tight end Dan Arnold and a third-round pick.

Henderson secured 31 tackles and two pass deflections in his final 10 games of the season with Carolina.
In 2022, Henderson appeared in all 17 games with Carolina, starting 10 of them. He had 58 tackles, six pass deflections, and two interceptions.
Last year in Carolina, Henderson appeared in 12 games (seven starts), and had 39 tackles, two pass deflections, and one sack.
Henderson signed with the Houston Texans in March of this year, but was released in late August as the team cut their roster down to 53.
The Steelers are now taking a chance on Henderson, who entered the NFL after three years at the University of Florida in which he had 93 tackles, eight tackles for loss, four sacks, 20 pass deflections, and six interceptions across 30 games.
Henderson has a ton of talent, but hasn’t been able to put it all together at the NFL level. He’ll have an opportunity to do it under one of the best head coaches in Mike Tomlin.
Tomlin always seems to get the best out of his players, and the Steelers are currently off to a 3-0 start this season with wins against the Atlanta Falcons, Denver Broncos, and Los Angeles Chargers.
The Steelers have the best defense in the NFL through three games, allowing just 229 yards and 8.7 points per game, which both rank first in the NFL.
The Steelers will look to keep their winning ways going this Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts. As for Henderson, he’ll start to learn the playbook and hope to earn an active roster call up in the next few weeks.
