Switch 2 Chipmaker Says Nintendo’s New Console has 10x the Graphics Performance of Switch

Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek’s network of contributors

Nintendo officially revealed in full its next console – the Nintendo Switch 2 – earlier this week, with an hour-long presentation that was densely packed with game announcements and details about the system’s hardware. Nintendo didn’t reveal everything about the Switch 2 during the presentation, but more details have started to filter out, and it’s sounding pretty capable.

Nvidia, the company that worked with Nintendo on the Switch 2’s internal hardware, has released a blog post talking about the console’s hardware capabilities. The post reveals that the Switch 2 will be capable of utilizing DLSS – a type of AI-powered upscaling – to push 4K visuals when the console is docked.

The graphics chip inside the Switch 2 is also much more powerful than the original Switch, and between the more powerful hardware and the AI capabilities, Nvidia claims that the Switch 2 has 10 times the graphics performance of the Switch. That kind of claim might seem outlandish, but Nintendo has already shown massive upgrades to Switch games on Switch 2, with Metroid Prime 4 in particular going from 900p at 60fps up to 4K at 60fps, or 1080p at 120fps.

Nvidia also confirmed that the 1080p 120hz screen in the Switch 2 is using G-Sync for its VRR (variable refresh rate) implementation, which is widely considered one of the best and most versatile implementations of VRR on the market. The Switch 2’s noise cancelling microphone and automatic background removal on its camera is also powered by Nvidia’s tech, with similar technology to Nvidia’s Broadcast software on Windows PCs.

All that tech comes at a cost, though, and as a result the Nintendo Switch 2 was announced to cost $449, a price that shocked a lot of Nintendo fans upon announcement. Games for the Switch 2 were also revealed to be more expensive, with most games seemingly moving from $60 to $70, and some games like the newly announced Mario Kart World even costing $80.

The Nintendo Switch 2 is set to be released on June 5, 2025, with Mario Kart World launching on the same day.
