The biggest relief operation of Hungary
Hungary has provided nearly 100 billion forints in aid to Ukraine and incoming refugees during the 1,000 days of the Russian-Ukrainian war, the Secretary of State for National Minorities at the Prime Minister’s Office said.
Miklós Soltész emphasised in Beregsurány that the charity organisations have contributed the most to the relief work. They brought 5,500 tonnes of food, clothing and medical supplies worth around 13 billion forints to Ukraine. Hungary, where 1.44 million refugees from the neighbouring country have arrived so far, has shown enormous solidarity.
The five aid centres in Záhony, Beregsurány, Barabás, Lónya and Tiszabec have taken in a total of 675,000 people. The refugees were given support in the form of accommodation, food, clothing, healthcare, work, education and free travel. Hungary has also provided assistance to Ukraine in the energy sector in the form of electricity supplies. The State Secretary thanked the six charitable organisations and local governments that helped to receive and care for the refugees, as well as for the relief work carried out in Transcarpathia. Despite Kiev’s previous policy of repeatedly targeting Hungarian energy supplies and the repeated disenfranchisement of Transcarpathian Hungarians, Hungary continues to provide enormous humanitarian assistance to the refugees.
