Today’s Nintendo Direct kicked off with a celebration of the 40th anniversary of the Mario franchise, with the original Super Mario Bros. game releasing on September 13, 1985, in Japan. As part of the celebration, we got our first teaser for the sequel to the Super Mario Movie, which is going to focus on the critically acclaimed Super Mario Galaxy games.
These platformers used planetoid-based gravity mechanics to make for a pair of fun platformers that are beloved by fans to this day, and it was also announced that those games will be coming to Switch 2 in October.

The movie’s announcement came with the promise that the Galaxy games would be the “main inspiration” for the new movie, though it will have things in store for “fans of every Mario era”. Of course, this implies that fan-favourite character, Rosalina, will be making their debut in the film franchise with this film, though it hasn’t been officially confirmed yet.
However, Chris Pratt, Anna Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black, Keegan-Michael Key, and Kevin Michael Richardson are all confirmed to be returning in their respective roles, with the film set for release in Spring 2026.
