Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek’s network of contributors
Academy Award winner Jamie Lee Curtis announced on Instagram that she and her husband, director Christopher Guest, will be donating $1 million to wildfire relief.
“My family is donating $1 million today to the relief efforts,” wrote the Everything Everywhere All At Once star, 66, in a post on Thursday, January 9. “We are in contact with Governor Newsom, Mayor Bass, and Seantor [sic] Schiff and I will post often about where you can send needed resources to reputable agencies.”

She gave more details in the caption, which read, “As the fire still rages on and @calfire @losangelesfiredepartment and all the available first responders and agencies involved in fighting fire and saving lives are still hard at work and neighbors and friends are banding together to save each other, my husband and I and our children have pledged $1 million from our Family Foundation to start a fund of support for our great city and state and the great people who live and love there.”
Curtis has been very active on Instagram since the emergency began. Early Thursday morning, she posted a photo of the burned city with the caption, “We are going to have to come together,as [sic] we may never have done before, in the City of Angels and help each other. AND WE WILL!”
Many fans of the actress shared their gratitude and support for her actions in the comments section. “The city of angels is gonna need more angels like you. Thank you for rallying!” wrote one follower. Another agreed, “Such an amazing and generous gesture from you and your family 🙌,” while one fan urged other wealthy Instagram users to follow suit. “Awesome people, put your money to use for those in need! Generosity is the highest gift! 😍”
Curtis has a long history of philanthropy and is an American Red Cross Ambassador. In another Instagram post, she wrote, “I hope you will go to [the American Red Cross] website and build your own evacuation kits and my new thing is to remember to laminate a card with all of the important telephone numbers because when all of the technology shuts down and there’s no electricity in the panic people forget how to reach each other.”
