Thunder’s Chet Holmgren Backs Shai Gilgeous-Alexander for NBA MVP Award
The 2024-25 NBA season is slowly upon us, and it is set to be yet another season filled with incredible storylines. Last season was the NBA’s 77th season, and this upcoming season promises to be one for the ages.

The Boston Celtics won the NBA title against the Dallas Mavericks, and Denver Nuggets superstar Nikola Jokic won his third NBA MVP award. Jokic has been the best player in the league for some time now, and while he was worthy of the award, many pundits and experts believed Oklahoma City Thunder superstar guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was robbed of MVP.
As always, the MVP award is up for debate, and that will be the case once again this season. A new year brings new opportunities, and many, including Gilgeous-Alexander’s teammate, Chet Holmgren, believes SGA’s time will soon come.
Holmgren appeared on Podcast P with Paul George and spoke highly of his teammate, saying he would put money on Gilgeous-Alexander winning MVP at some point in his career.
“If I was a betting man, i’d put some money on [SGA] winning an MVP at some point.”
George doubled down on the Gilgeous-Alexander comments and called him the smoothest player in the league right now.
“Shai is probably the smoothest player in the league right now,” said George. Like you said, anything you do, he has a counter for. He has a way of contorting his body; he knows how to get the small little turn to get by you, and it’s unorthodox. If you compare him to a boxer, it’s hard to get a read on him like his style is just so different.”
According to DraftKings SportsBook, Gilgeous-Alexander has the fourth-best odds to win NBA MVP for the 2024-25 season (+600). Ahead of him are Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid (+600), Dallas Mavericks superstar guard Luka Dončić (+370), and leading the way is Jokic with +350 odds.
Gilgeous-Alexander is coming off his second ALl-NBA First-team season where he recorded 30.1 points per game, 5.5 rebounds, 6.2 assists, and 2.0 steals (a career-high) while shooting 53.5 percent from the field and 35.5 percent from three.
The Canadian guard can do it all on the basketball court. While MVP will be nice, Gilgeous-Alexander will do his best to lead the Thunder to their first NBA title in franchise history.
The Thunder have the pieces to do just that, and we’ll see if Gilgeous-Alexander is the guy to lead them to the promised land.
