Titans Star Defender Wins Appeal, Won’t Face Previous Suspension

Tennessee Titans edge rusher Arden Key won’t face suspension for a performance-enhancing drug violation following a successful appeal against the NFL ban.
Key would have had to face a six-game suspension, had he failed to reverse the ban. Details of what led to the reversal have not been revealed but it’s evident that what transpired led to clearing Key of any suspension.

Key is one of the best defenders in the Titans’ unit. His absence from the team would’ve been costly in terms of production and success.
Titans defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons shared via X, formerly known as Twitter, that Key had won his appeal. Simmons also added: “See you guys Sept 8.”
Key chose not to speak to the media in August about the violation but Titans head coach Brian Callahan stated that the expectation was the edge would serve some sort of suspension but the timetable was unclear.
Key is one of Tennessee’s experienced edge rushers, alongside Harold Landry III. The Titans’ outside linebacker depth isn’t deep so having both Key and Landry together on the field is directly correlated to the unit’s success.
The backup options at edge rusher include Rashad Weaver, Shane Ray, and rookie Jaylen Harrell. Weaver has only started four games throughout his three seasons in Tennessee. Ray hasn’t taken an NFL snap in six seasons and Harrell was one of the later draft picks the Titans selected in the 2024 NFL Draft.
Throughout training camp, the linebacker has competed with the first team. Following the suspension on July 30, the Titans didn’t add any new players to their roster and chose to wait out the process.
In 2023, Key had six sacks, which was the third-most of any Tennessee player. the seventh-year veteran signed a three-year, $21 million contract with the Titans in March 2023.
Key will not participate in Saturday’s preseason matchup with the Seattle Seahawks, according to Titans head coach Callahan. Callahan announced that starters would not suit up for the game.
Key has played for a number of NFL teams throughout his seven-year career including the Las Vegas Raiders, the San Francisco 49ers, and the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Key isn’t the only NFL player to face suspension for a performance-enhancing drug violation this season. Rams backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo will miss the first two games of the season for the violation.
Nevertheless, with Key on board, the Titans kick off the 2024 regular season against the Chicago Bears on Sept. 8.
