The Settle Mariners entered Friday two wins away from making the World Series. The team was aggressive at the trade deadline, but may have holes to fill in the offseason.
The Mariners filled a hole at first base by acquiring Josh Naylor before the trade deadline. However, he will be a free agent after the season ends, and the team will once again need to find a first baseman. The Mariners could re-sign Naylor, or they could find an upgrade.
The Mariners were one of the best teams in baseball this season, and could be set up to contend for the next few years. If the team wants to upgrade at first base, it could go after Pete Alonso, who is expected to opt out of his deal. MLB insider Robert Murray tabbed the Mariners as a fit for Alonso in free agency.
Alonso played in 162 games for the second straight year and slashed .272/.347/.524. He hit 38 home runs and collected 126 RBIs. Naylor has been a solid addition for the Mariners, but there are few better first basemen than Alonso.
Pairing Alonso with Cal Raleigh would give the Mariners an elite duo in their lineup. Naylor would be a cheaper option than Alonso, but what Alonso would bring in terms of power would be hard to beat. The Mariners are in a position to win now, and the New York Mets may not be willing to pay Alonso what he wants.
Alonso was unable to find a long-term deal last offseason. He should be able to find a lucrative contract this winter, but the Mets’ already high payroll may not have room for what Alonso may want.
