Trump Administration Picks Live: President-Elect Taps Matt Whitaker as NATO Ambassador

President-elect Donald Trump has named Matthew Whitaker, his former acting attorney general, as the next U.S. ambassador to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). Whitaker’s nomination comes at a crucial time, amid a rapidly escalating Russian-Ukraine war and rising tensions over the U.S.’s NATO spending. Little is known about Whitaker’s foreign policy views, but in a statement today, Trump indicated that he would take a hardline America-first approach. “Matt is a strong warrior and loyal Patriot, who will ensure the United States’ interests are advanced and defended,” the president-elect wrote on social media. Trump added that Whitaker would also work to “strengthen relationships with our NATO Allies.”
