University of Minnesota Student Detained By ICE Over DUI
A University of Minnesota graduate student was detained by federal immigration authorities following a visa revocation related to a prior DUI conviction.
“This is not related to student protests. The individual in question was arrested after a visa revocation by the State Dept. related to a prior criminal history for a DUI,” a senior DHS official told Newsweek.
Why It Matters
President Donald Trump has pledged to deport millions of undocumented immigrants as part of his push for mass removals. He has also authorized Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to carry out arrests in or near sensitive locations, including schools and universities.
The recent detention of a University of Minnesota graduate student by immigration authorities has sparked concerns over enforcement actions near educational institutions.
What To Know
ICE agents detained a University of Minnesota graduate student last week, an incident the university called “deeply concerning” in a statement on Friday.
The student was arrested Thursday at an off-campus residence, according to university president Rebecca Cunningham.
“The university had no prior knowledge of this incident and did not share any information with federal authorities before it occurred,” the statement reads.
The University of Minnesota has not released specific details about the detained student, aside from confirming his enrollment at the Carlson School of Management.
This comes after Secretary of State Marco Rubio revealed that he has signed over 300 letters revoking visas for students, visitors, and others, citing their foreign policy views or criminal activities as grounds for expulsion. Since taking office in late January, Rubio said he has been signing visa revocation letters daily.

What People Are Saying
Jake Ricker, a university spokesperson told Newsweek that the “university is providing support to the student.”
Governor Tim Walz on X: “I just spoke with Homeland Security to get more information and I will share when I learn more. The University of Minnesota is an international destination for education and research,” Walz wrote in a post on X, formerly Twitter. “We have any number of students studying here with visas, and we need answers.”
The University of Minnesota said in a statement: “The university had no prior knowledge of this incident and did not share any information with federal authorities before it occurred.
“It is important to note that our campus departments of public safety, including UMPD, do not enforce federal immigration laws, and our officers do not inquire about an individual’s immigration status. Their focus remains on public safety, fostering trust and maintaining strong relationships across the university community.”
Minnesota State Senator Doron Clark said in a social media post: “I am saddened and angered that ICE is operating around the University of Minnesota. Our campuses should be a safe place for all students, staff, and visitors. I am monitoring the situation closely, and encourage you to stay vigilant and well-informed.”
What Happens Next
The administration is expected to revoke more visas.
