USPS Unveils New Postcard Stamps

The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) has just unveiled five new designs for its Postcard Stamps, which—despite the onset of Spring being just days away— celebrate the Fall.

Spring starts on Thursday in the Northern Hemisphere, but last Friday saw the launch of new autumnal-themed stamps, designed by the agency’s art director Antonio Alcala. It means the latest designs are ready to be used for postcards sent from vacations during Spring Break.

Newsweek has reached out to USPS by email seeking further information and comment about the new designs.

Why It Matters

Postcard stamps are specifically designed for mailing postcards and—like Forever Stamps—will always cover the cost of that type of postage, no matter when they were bought.

Instead of a price, each stamp bears the words “USA/POSTCARD” across the top. They are currently valued at 56 cents each, which is how much it costs to mail a postcard.

What To Know

The USPS often releases new designs for stamps, such as the fishing-themed images on last week’s new set of Forever Stamps, or stamps that commemorate public holidays, or the advent of a new year. Occasionally, stamps are produced to commemorate a public figure, such as actress Betty White.

The new designs released on Friday are called the Vibrant Leaves collection and can be seen below.

The latest collection of Postcard Stamps, which were released on Friday, is called Vibrant Leaves.

They feature a single leaf on each stamp, with the leaves all from different trees and spanning the autumnal color spectrum from yellow through to burnt oranges and crimsons.

A yellow aspen leaf, an apricot-colored sassafras leaf, an orange oak leaf, a bright red maple leaf, and a burgundy sweetgum leaf complete the set.

The nondenominated Vibrant Leaves stamps are priced at the postcard rate and issued in panes of 20 or coils, the USPS said in a press release last week.

The new stamps come amid a tumultuous time for the USPS. The service has been struggling financially and saw a backlash last July when it raised prices for the sixth time since 2020.

Postmaster General Louis DeJoy announced plans this month to cut 10,000 jobs and slash billions from the USPS budget. He will be working with Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), according to a letter sent to Congress on Thursday.

What People Are Saying

Describing the inspiration behind the latest collection, USPS art director Antonio Alcala said: “I am enchanted by the colors one finds in leaves, especially during the autumn season. I wanted to present a gradation of colors but with a variety of leaf shapes and trees.”

What Happens Next

Customers may buy the stamps via Post Offices or from the “Shop Stamps” section of USPS’s website.
