Katy Perry is set to make space history on Monday as part of the first all-female crewed mission to fly into space since 1963.
The pop superstar will join five other women aboard the company’s New Shepard rocket, operated by Jeff Bezos’ private aerospace firm, which will make its 31st flight, Mission NS-31, this week.
The Context
In February, Blue Origin announced that its April 14 trip would feature an all-female crew and passenger list. Bezos’ fiancée, journalist Lauren Sánchez, organized a list of women to take the trip, including Katy Perry, TV host Gayle King, engineer Aisha Bowe, civil rights activist Amanda Nguyen and film producer Kerianne Flynn.
The passengers, along with the crew, will all be women, making this the first all-female space flight since Russian astronaut Valentina Tereshkova flew alone in 1963.

How To Watch Katy Perry in Space
New Shepard’s launch window will open at 9:30 a.m. ET, with the ship launching from Blue Origin’s West Texas launch site.
Blue Origin has confirmed that there will be a livestream of the launch. Previously, it has streamed launches from its YouTube channel here.
How Long Will Katy Perry Be in Space?
The flight is expected to be quite short, with Perry saying that the trip will only last 11 minutes.
Once airborne, the capsule is scheduled to separate from its booster three minutes into the flight, allowing passengers to unbuckle and float in microgravity for around three minutes before reentering the atmosphere and landing near the launch site.
Each seat in the capsule has a large window, believed to be the largest ever used in spaceflight, to offer panoramic views of Earth during the short journey. Blue Origin has said passengers have undergone two days of training to prepare for zero gravity, emergency protocols, and safety procedures.
The NS-31 mission is Blue Origin’s 11th human flight and its most high-profile to date. The spacecraft is fully reusable, and its booster will land separately from the capsule about two miles from the launch site.

Katy Perry said that she was excited for the trip and had previously looked at other ways to fly into space, telling Elle in an interview: “Even when Blue Origin was first talking about commercial travel to space, I was like, ‘Sign me up! I’m first in line.’ And then they called me, and I was like, ‘Really? I get an invite?’ And then they told me about it being the first all-female crew.
“I really felt very sure when they sent me the picture of the space pod, because on the front of the pod is a feather, and that’s my mom’s nickname for me. And so I was like, Okay, I see it.”
