Wild Star Kirill Kaprizov to Undergo Surgery, Out Multiple Weeks

Just when things were looking up for Kirill Kaprizov’s health, the Minnesota Wild announced that he would be undergoing surgery on Tuesday.

The star forward missed practice after talk within the organization as to whether he would need surgery rumbled over the last several days.

Kaprizov is now expected to miss at least four weeks because of the lower-body injury that he’s been nursing since mid-December that caused him to miss 12 games in which the Wild posted a 7-5 record.

“It is not a season-ending injury, but it will put him on the shelf for the next little while,” Wild general manager Bill Guerin said Tuesday. “We’ve been down this road before, and it’s unfortunate.

“I mean, Kirill was having a Hart Trophy-type of season. It’s disappointing for him. It’s disappointing for us too.”

He worked his way back onto the ice a couple of weeks into his rehab before making an official return to action on Jan. 23 against the Utah Hockey Club. He’s played three games since then, logging a pair of assists.

Kaprizov said that he wouldn’t be limited by the injury when he initially returned, indicating he was in full health.

“Just something happened,” Kaprizov said to The Athletic. “I just don’t want to talk about this a lot. It’s now good.”

The Wild figure that with the 2025 4 Nations Face-Off approaching in mid-February, this would be the most convenient time to address the injury head-on given that the league will pause for two weeks.

Kaprizov’s injury is undisclosed, but he was shut down after the holiday break as coach John Hynes said he was “banged up” and “a little sore.”

The injury took a hit on Kaprizov’s Hart Trophy campaign, as he was one of the league’s leading point-scorers one month ago with 54 points in 30 games.

“Kirill is very upset,” Guerin said. “Kirill is such a team-focused guy. And I think with what he has, he knows he could probably get by in games and try to help the team. But he doesn’t like it. Him at 60 percent is better than most players in the League, but he wants to be 100 percent and help us play as long as we can this year. And I agree with him.”

Kaprizov’s absence leaves a significant void in the lineup for Hynes, but the Wild have managed to stay above .500, securing key wins in Dallas, Carolina, Washington, and Colorado.

Matt Boldy has been placed on the top line with Mats Zuccarello and Marco Rossi, with Boldy expected to contribute to the team’s secondary scoring.
