Winter Storm Strikes As 20 Inches Of Snow Becomes ‘Life-Threatening’


Winter storm warnings are in place for 15 states as up to 20 inches of snow and winds reaching 45 mph are forecast to strike from Sunday, causing “life-threatening” conditions, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

States Affected by Winter Storms 

The NWS has warned that Maine, North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Hampshire, New York, Vermont, Maryland, California, Pennsylvania, Alaska, Delaware, and New Jersey are likely to be hit by extreme winter weather conditions from Sunday through to early next week. 

Maine

Parts of the coastal and far eastern, interior Downeast, and Penobscot Valley could see between 5 and 11 inches of snow and 50 mph winds, and parts of coastal and interior Waldo, Knox, Lincoln, and Sagadahoc Counties could get up to 10 inches of snow and 45 mph winds until Tuesday.

Between 7 and 14 inches could hit parts of southwest Maine, and up to 9 inches of snow could strike central interior Cumberland County by Monday night.

Kennebec and Androscoggin Counties are expected to get between 5 and 8 inches of snow and 40 mph winds, lasting until Tuesday, likely to create “dangerous driving conditions.” 

North Carolina

Winds reaching 50 mph and up to 12 inches of snow could fall across higher elevations in Ashe and Watauga Counties, lasting until Monday 

Virginia 

Grayson and Smyth Counties could get up to 12 inches of snow and 50 mph—especially over Mount Rogers—until Monday night, and in Tazewell County, up to 7 inches of snow and 35 mph winds are expected until Tuesday.

Western Highland County and central and northern Virginia Blue Ridge should expect up to 12 inches of snow, especially along the highest peaks, by Monday morning, alongside winds gusting at around 45 mph, which is likely to reduce visibility down to less than a quarter of a mile at times. 

West Virginia 

Western Greenbrier County could see between 5 and 12 inches of snow, and Mercer and Summers Counties could see up to 7 inches and 35 mph winds, lasting until Tuesday.

Western Mineral County could get up to 8 inches of snow and 35 mph winds, while western Grant and western Pendleton Counties could get up to 12 inches and 45 mph winds, lasting until Monday night.

Massachusetts

Parts of central, northeastern, and western Massachusetts are forecast to get up to 20 inches of snow by Tuesday, with winds reaching 55 mph, likely to cause “blowing snow” and “hazardous conditions.” 

The Berkshires in western Massachusetts could see 45 mph winds and up to 20 inches of snow by Monday night  

Connecticut 

Between 12 and 20 inches of snow are expected to fall across Hartford, Tolland, and Windham Counties by Tuesday, and Litchfield County in northwestern Connecticut could see similar snowfall amounts, with 45 mph winds, lasting until Monday night. 

New Hampshire

Parts of central and southern New Hampshire could get up to 14 inches of snow, and Belknap, Merrimack, and southern Carroll Counties could get up to 9 inches, with winds reaching 40 mph, from Sunday night through Monday. 

New York

Up to 20 inches of snow could fall across Ulster, Greene, Columbia, and Dutchess Counties from Sunday afternoon through Monday, and up to 12 inches of snow could land over Schoharie and eastern and western Schenectady, Albany, and Rensselaer Counties, with winds ranging between 30 and 40 mph, overnight Sunday into, and through, Monday.

Delaware and Otsego Counties could get up to 15 inches of snow, and Sullivan County up to 20, by Monday night and northern and southern Clinton Counties could get up to 7 inches and 35 mph winds until Monday afternoon.

Vermont 

All of southern Vermont could see between 5 and 12 inches of snow—with higher amounts possible locally—and 40 mph winds lasting until Monday night. 

Maryland

Between 4 and 8 inches of snow could fall across the extreme western parts of Allegany County (especially in areas above 2,500 feet), and parts of north central, northeast, and southern Maryland could get up to 14 inches of snow by Monday.

Eastern and western Garrett Counties could get up to 12 inches and 45 mph winds until Monday night.

California 

Up to 10 inches of snow could fall across northern Trinity County by Sunday afternoon, alongside winds reaching 55 mph, with the NWS warning that “travel could be very difficult. Tire chains may be necessary if traveling through mountain passes, and road closures are possible.”

Pennsylvania

Between 7 and 15 inches of snow and 35 mph winds are likely across northern Wayne, Susquehanna, and Wyoming Counties, and Lackawanna, Luzerne, Pike, and Southern Wayne Counties could get up to 20 inches of snow and 40 mph winds, lasting until Monday night.

Parts of central Pennsylvania could see between 4 and 9 inches of snow and 40 mph winds until Monday afternoon, and Cambria and Somerset Counties could get up to 12 inches of snow along with 40 mph winds until Tuesday morning. 

Alaska

The eastern Norton Sound, Nulato Hills, and parts of the lower and middle Koyukuk Valley could get up to 8 inches of snow and 40 mph winds until Tuesday night, and the south Slopes of the western Brooks Range and the upper Kobuk Valley could get up to 14 inches of snow with 40 mph winds until Monday afternoon. 

Up to 12 inches of snow could fall across the Bering Strait Coast, interior Seward Peninsula, northern Seward Peninsula, Shishmaref, and southern Seward Peninsula Coast by Monday night, and up to 20 inches of snow is forecast to strike the boroughs of northern Denali, central Interior, Nenana, and Fairbanks North Star by Wednesday.

Delaware 

Between 13 and 17 inches of snow are expected in New Castle county by Monday night, along with winds reaching 40 mph.

New Jersey 

Sussex, Warren, Hunterdon, and Salem Counties could see up to 18 inches of snow and 40 mph winds, lasting until Monday evening, which is likely to make travel “very difficult to impossible.”
