Woman, 86, Shares Why She Has Chosen To Be Single for 40 Years: ‘Validated’

An 86-year-old woman from Manhattan, New York, has gained viral attention after sharing the story behind her decision to remain single, and celibate, for over four decades.

Liz Friedman opened up about her choice in a TikTok video from December 10, which had been filmed and shared by Maryjane Fahey under @gloriousbroads. Fahey’s online project, Glorious Broads, intends to spotlight mature and elderly women who defy societal norms and embrace aging with grace and individuality. Friedman’s admission has amassed more than 469,000 views, igniting a wave of validation and support online.

“My followers love Liz for her fabulous attitude,” Fahey, 74, told Newsweek. “She is direct. She is honest. And she is funny.”

Friedman’s story, she said, highlights a sadly neglected subject in society—the joy and fulfillment found in the lives of happy, independent women later in life. Friedman’s refreshingly honest answers about her own celibacy challenge the conventional notions of fulfillment and happiness.

When asked if she has ever regretted her decision to stay single and celibate, Friedman said: “Never for a moment. You know, it’s not like it was a conscious decision, it’s just, in the course of my life, that was not an issue; it simply ceased to be an issue.”

Viewers were able to see Fahey probe deeper into the celibacy aspect, questioning whether it was challenging.

“No, it’s the law of physics; an object in motion tends to stay in motion, and an object at rest tends to stay at rest,” Friedman said. “So, you know, when you’re sexually involved, you want more and you want more.

“When you’re not having it, it somehow fades onto the back burner. It’s not uppermost in your life,” Friedman added.

The unapologetic authenticity of her words struck a chord with viewers on the platform. The clip quickly went viral, with countless comments from other women who found validation in Friedman’s narrative, or could otherwise relate.

“While I’ve had several long term relationships since divorcing at 30, I will never remarry,” one viewer said. “And now at 57, I’m done dating.

“I quit about 5 years ago and still regret nothing. My life full with just me.”

Another added: “The longer a woman is single, the harder it is for her to give it away.”

Fahey elaborated on the significance of Friedman’s choice, noting the liberating message it sends to other women.

“People need to realize what a wonderful life it is—being totally free—living an unconventional life that does not involve a partner,” Fahey said. “And she has decided to live without a sex life.

“Lots of people have responded to that. I myself like a sex life. Just don’t need a partner,” Fahey added.

The online response to the clip suggests a shared sentiment among many women who, like Friedman, find empowerment in their independent decisions and in Friedman and Fahey’s unapologetic embrace of a diverse spectrum of lifestyles.

Fahey said: “I think the huge online response is because other women know this is true, and are validated by this fabulous woman.”
