Woman Adopts Stray Cat—3 Years Later She’s on a ‘Different Color Setting’
After adopting a white kitten, a Reddit user was baffled when three years later the kitty changed color—and internet users are sharing similar experiences.
In a post shared in February under the username u/K1raVee, the poster explains: “Adopted a white cat… now she’s on a different color setting.” The post features pictures of the feline as a kitten and now.
As a small kitten, her fur looks mostly white, with just a touch of gray at the end of her tail—however, three years down the line, the cat’s fur is now mainly gray throughout her entire body.
“While scrolling on my gallery, I found this picture of my cat when she’s little, I originally found her in the street alone during a rainy night in 2022. I adopted her, and now in 2026 her coat changed so much!” the poster wrote.
The video has so far received over 7,600 upvotes and 243 comments on the platform.
One user, Fullmoonbeading, commented: “Mine was the same! Her name is Elsa because she was white and now my mom calls her Cinderelsa because she looks like she’s been dusted with soot!”
SleepyVayne wrote: “I believe the term is toasting.”
Tigress666 added: “That’s what happens with colorpoints. They get darker as they get older.”
It is not actually unusual for a cat’s fur to change color. Catster explains that a cat’s fur changing color can have several causes, some harmless and others worth checking with a vet.
One normal reason is aging: as cats get older, pigment-producing cells decline and hairs can go gray, usually starting around the muzzle.
Genetics also plays a role—certain breeds like Siamese and Burmese naturally develop darker or differently colored fur patterns as they mature.
In some cats, a temperature-sensitive pigment enzyme causes fur to darken in cooler areas and lighten in warm parts, so seasonal or environmental temperature shifts can alter appearance too.
Illnesses, such as autoimmune conditions that reduce pigmentation, and health problems like hyperthyroidism, can also affect coat color or quality, so sudden or dramatic changes should prompt veterinary advice.
A lack of key nutrients—especially amino acids and minerals involved in pigment production—can make dark coats appear reddish or faded, but this often reverses with balanced nutrition.
Lastly, sun exposure can lighten fur by bleaching pigments over time. Because fur changes can signal different things, owners noticing them should consider discussing observations with a vet.
