Woman Has Very Unfiltered Reaction to Roommate’s New Haircut: ‘Oh my God’

A woman has gone viral after her friend’s incredible reaction to her new haircut showcased their strong friendship.

Autumn Coelho, 22, recorded the moment she revealed her surprise haircut to her roommate and best friend, Chloe Smith, and ended up capturing a beautiful moment that led thousands to comment on their friendship.

Coelho told Newsweek that she has had very long hair for over a decade, and many of her friends have “never seen me with short hair.” After going through a difficult breakup around the time of her birthday in September, Coelho saw multiple videos online that suggested “hair holds memories” and “hair holds trauma.”

After “everything I’ve been through,” Coelho decided now was the time: “I thought maybe I can cut the negativity out, and just chop off all my hair,” she said.

“I didn’t tell my best friend/roommate that I was going to do this, and she was coming home late from work that night, so I waited for her to get home and recorded her reaction to the new cut.” Coelho added: “She definitely didn’t disappoint.”

And TikTok users agreed, as Coelho’s video has close to 10 million views and over 1.3 million likes since being shared to her account @autumncoelho on October 9.

Smith, 21, walks in the door with another friend, catching a glimpse of Coelho’s haircut, and immediately shouts: “Oh my God! You look so good!”

Getting closer, screaming, and apparently unaware Coelho is recording, she says: “Like I wasn’t in love with you already!”

The short but sweet clip hugely resonated with viewers, with one commenter writing: “This is why marriage is so often a letdown … because our friendships have set the bar SO high.”

Another wrote, “Taking notes so I know what to say to my wife,” while one posted: “I need a friend like her.”

“I want her on my team,” another agreed, and as one commented: “Where can I get one of her?”

Friendships between adults in the United States have changed over the years. According to data from Statista, a survey from 1990 found that just 3 percent of respondents said they had no close friends; 16 percent said they had five close friends; and 33 percent said they had 10 or more people whom they considered close friends.

In 2021, a survey asking the same questions found that 12 percent of adult respondents did not believe they had any close friends, and just 13 percent considered themselves as having 10 or more close friends.

Coelho said: “When I posted the video, I definitely didn’t expect it to go viral and get as much attention as it did.”

Server Coelho, who works with Smith in the same restaurant, added that she was “so incredibly grateful for all the love and positivity on the post and in the comments.”
