Yankees Receive Optimistic Anthony Volpe Update: Report
The New York Yankees know they won’t have Anthony Volpe in their starting lineup on opening day as he continues to recover from injury. How much of the season he misses remains to be seen, but the number of games could now be fewer.
In a recent report for MLB.com, Yankees insider Bryan Hoch reported on Friday that Volpe is progressing through his rehab very well.
“I’m here in Tampa, and I see Anthony every day,” Cashman told Hoch. “He’s doing great. His rehab is doing well. He’s in good spirits, and he’s looking forward to getting back and joining us when he’s 110 percent so we can deploy him properly. But so far, so good. No issues. … He’s here, working his tail off as expected, with a smile on his face and fully committed. So we look forward to him rejoining us at shortstop at some point, sooner than later.”
New York does have Jose Caballero who will hold down the shortstop position until Volpe returns, but the Bronx Bombers would love to get him back sooner than expected. This season is projected to be a big one for the 24-year-old shortstop as it may decide his future with the organization.
Volpe’s progress report is a step in the right direction as players begin reporting to Florida for spring training. Hoch added via Cashman that the team still does not expect him to return in April, but he did not elaborate beyond that. While the Yankees certainly won’t rush him back, any on-field work he can do in Florida would put his recovery timeline even farther ahead.
