12-year-old girl reportedly chased alleged burglar into soybean field before his arrest
CROCKETT COUNTY, Tenn. (TCN) — A juvenile reportedly thwarted a possible crime by chasing an alleged would-be burglar.
According to the Crockett County Sheriff’s Department, Robert Sills allegedly tried to break into a residence, but the homeowners noticed him and he fled into a nearby soybean field. The homeowners’ 12-year-old daughter reportedly pursued Sills.
In a statement obtained by WREG-TV, public information officer Stephen Sutton of the Crockett County Sheriff’s Office said, “She was with her grandmother, but the suspect was trying to break into her home, and the grandmother and the 12-year-old began a pursuit to try to detain this individual for law enforcement.”
A motorist allegedly saw the girl chasing the suspect and helped restrain him. According to the sheriff’s office, a farmer also stepped in and provided zip ties to secure Sills until the sheriff’s office arrived.
Deputies learned Sills had an active arrest warrant against him and now also faces charges of criminal trespass and aggravated attempted burglary.
Sheriff Troy Klyce said, “This incident serves as a testament to the courage and resourcefulness of our community. It’s heartening to see citizens step up to protect their neighborhood. Our deputies commend the bravery of the young girl and appreciate the assistance rendered by witnesses. I am especially glad the young lady was not hurt by this nuisance in our community.”
