Ex-boyfriend arrested after pregnant 16-year-old is found dead in wooded area
LOGANVILLE, Ga. (TCN) — Police arrested a 20-year-old man after his pregnant 16-year-old ex-girlfriend was found dead in a wooded area near her home this week.
According to the Gwinnett County Police Department, in the early hours of July 15, Mia Campos’ family called 911 after they discovered her body in a wooded area along a roadway. Relatives told police Campos left the home the night before with an unknown individual. Campos’ family reportedly tracked down the victim’s body using a cellphone application when she didn’t return.
Authorities were unable to determine a cause of death based on preliminary evidence found at the scene, but the medical examiner completed an autopsy on July 16 and ruled Campos’ death a homicide.
Mia Campos’ father, Edward Campos, told WANF-TV, “I found my daughter laid face down. It was hard. I knew it was something wrong — her lips, her bleeding nose.”
The following day, authorities arrested Jesus Monroy, Campos’ ex-boyfriend, for providing false statements to a police officer.
In a statement obtained by WAGA-TV, Sgt. Collin Flynn said, “During that interview, they determined he provided false statements, and he was arrested in connection to providing false statements to a police officer.”
Family members told WANF the suspect was the father of Campos’ unborn child. She was reportedly seven months pregnant at the time of her death.
Monroy remains held in the Gwinnett County Jail without bond.
