Florida man allegedly stabbed his mother in the head and neck
CAPE CORAL, Fla. (TCN) — A 28-year-old man stands accused of stabbing and killing his 69-year-old mother, who was found deceased last week.
On Sept. 16, the Cape Coral Police Department responded to a home after family members located their mother deceased. Officers observed the victim, Rosemary Johnson, with a “significant number of stab wounds to her head and neck.”
Rosemary Johnson’s son, Devin Johnson, had reportedly left the scene in a vehicle shortly before officers arrived. The Lee County Sheriff’s Office assisted police in locating the car and attempted a traffic stop near Collier County. Authorities disabled the vehicle using stop sticks, and Devin Johnson fled on foot.
According to police, Collier County Sheriff’s Office deputies chased Johnson and subdued him with the help of a K-9. Allegedly, Johnson struck the K-9 multiple times when police tried to put him in handcuffs, and he also attempted to take an officer’s firearm.
Investigators reportedly seized Johnson’s vehicle and observed blood on the exterior and interior. Police said Johnson’s shoes also had blood on them.
Johnson was booked into the Collier County Jail on initial charges of fleeing and eluding law enforcement, battery on law enforcement, attempting to take a law enforcement officer’s firearm, and animal cruelty. Police said he has also been charged with second-degree murder.
Relatives reportedly told investigators that Johnson had a criminal history of domestic violence and substance abuse. He allegedly bought a plane ticket to Costa Rica on the day of his mother’s death.
