SUFFOLK COUNTY, N.Y. (TCN) — Investigators recently resurfaced the 1978 cold case shooting death of a victim only known as “Montauk Mary.”
According to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, on March 22, 1978, a passerby found a body lying face-up and alerted law enforcement. Responding officers determined the victim was a female, likely in her 60s, with short gray hair, hazel eyes, and wearing a plaid tweed coat, dress, and orange slippers. Authorities said she wasn’t wearing undergarments.
The medical examiner determined the victim had been shot several times, including once in the chest and three times in the legs. Investigators suspect she had been dead for hours before the discovery.
According to the district attorney’s office, this year, the Suffolk County Cold Case Task Force worked with Suffolk County Police Department forensic artist Danielle Gruttadaurio to create a sketch, revealing what the victim may have looked like. Her identity remains unknown, and she is known only as “Montauk Mary.”
