Man allegedly killed his wife, wrapped her in plastic, and lived with decomposing body for a month
BEXAR COUNTY, Texas (TCN) — Authorities recently announced the arrest of a wanted man who stands accused of killing his wife and living with her decomposed body for nearly a month.
According to Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar, on the night of June 19, deputies responded to a call from a concerned relative who believed 49-year-old Charles Byrd had killed his wife, Angela Byrd. At the scene, the sheriff’s office discovered the suspected decomposed remains of Angela Byrd wrapped in plastic.
According to Salazar, officials recovered blankets, carpets, and plastic bags, as well as various household substances to hide the victim’s body and “mask the odor.” Authorities initially asked for the public’s help in locating Charles Byrd, who wasn’t at the scene.
On July 20, Salazar announced that the sheriff’s office located Byrd hiding at a house and took him into custody. Byrd reportedly described a physical attack between him and his wife that he believes led to her death around June 16. Over the course of nearly a month, Byrd allegedly lived with the victim’s decomposing body.
According to Salazar, Byrd doesn’t have a criminal history, and the suspect made a comment along the lines of “go big or go home” when talking about the alleged attack.
Officials are awaiting autopsy results from the medical examiner, including cause and manner of death, as well as positive identification. As a result, the sheriff said they cannot yet charge Byrd with murder, but investigators are “fairly certain” she died from injuries inflicted on her.
Byrd remains held in the Bexar County Jail on a charge of tampering with evidence with intent to impair a human corpse.
