Man convicted of killing girlfriend, her teen son, and locking bodies in a bedroom before fleeing
GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. (TCN) — A 29-year-old man will spend the rest of his life behind bars for fatally shooting his live-in girlfriend and her teen son before trying to flee to Mexico.
The Gwinnett County District Attorney’s Office announced Aug. 1 that a jury found William Adams guilty of two counts of felony murder and two counts of aggravated assault in connection with the deaths of 39-year-old Mary Lindsay and 15-year-old Atif Muhammad Jr. Adams received two consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole.
According to prosecutors, on March 26, 2021, Lindsay’s 19-year-old daughter went to check on her mother after she hadn’t been heard from in several days. Authorities noted that she and Muhammad’s 15-year-old twin sister did not live with Lindsay.
The 19-year-old daughter reportedly crawled through a window to get inside the residence and found her 8-year-old brother sleeping in their mother’s room. According to prosecutors, she discovered her mother and Muhammad deceased in a locked bedroom and called law enforcement. Police determined that Lindsay and Muhammad were killed on March 24, and the 8-year-old was left alone and didn’t know about the deaths for two days.
Authorities recovered three 9 mm shell casings connected to ammunition located in the master bedroom. Officials obtained an arrest warrant for Adams. According to prosecutors, police in Laredo, Texas, arrested Adams after he tried to cross the border into Mexico under an assumed name and without a passport. He also reportedly stole $2,000 from his girlfriend’s bank account.
The district attorney’s office said Muhammad’s twin sister testified that days before the shooting, the siblings found a firearm in their mom’s room and took a picture of it. When they asked Lindsay about the gun, she reportedly claimed it belonged to the defendant.
Prosecutors allege that Adams was controlling and abusive to the victim. Lindsay reportedly emailed herself a photo of an arm injury the defendant had given her, which was later presented to the jury.
