New mom accused of killing her 1-day-old baby at homeless encampment
OXNARD, Calif. (TCN) — A woman has been charged with murder after her newborn baby was found dead at a homeless encampment.
The Ventura County District Attorney’s Office announced that Marisol Flores, 30, is believed to have given birth at a homeless encampment on Feb 8. KTTV reports officers received a call that morning reporting a birth and subsequent medical complications. When they arrived, the child was pronounced dead at the scene.
The newborn showed visible signs of blunt force trauma, according to the DA.
Flores was taken to a hospital for treatment and then arrested for felony child endangerment, police announced. After an investigation, police say they obtained additional information that led them to believe Flores was responsible for killing the 1-day-old child. She was then charged with murder and assault on a child causing death.
According to the DA, witnesses reported seeing Flores at the encampment the previous day, still pregnant. When they saw her again the following day, she was no longer pregnant and did not have a baby with her.
According to the DA, Flores is scheduled to be arraigned Feb. 13 and is being held in custody with bail set at $500,000.
