‘Nonchalant’ Texas man arrested for allegedly killing his grandparents

AUSTIN, Texas (TCN) — A 21-year-old man is in custody on suspicion of killing his grandparents following a welfare check.

According to the Austin Police Department, on the afternoon of Saturday, Sept. 21, officers responded to a residence on Brookhill Drive. Multiple concerned callers requested that police check on 75-year-old Shari Mallory-Maxa and 76-year-old Anthony Maxa and that “Kyler Monaghan was refusing to open the door to let them see the couple.”

Officers made contact with Chevy Kyler Monaghan in the driveway of the home, and he told police that his grandparents were inside and unharmed. According to an arrest affidavit reviewed by KEYE-TV, authorities observed Monaghan packing bags into the back of his grandma’s vehicle at the time. The affidavit alleges that Monaghan seemed “nonchalant” while communicating with police. He allegedly “calmly sat down, lit a marijuana cigarette, and opened a soda can.”

KEYE reports that an officer found ammunition in Monaghan’s pockets, as well as his grandmother’s pearls and prescription medication. Authorities also reportedly found boxes of women’s jewelry that he had loaded into his grandmother’s vehicle.

Police allege Monaghan shot and killed the victims in the home, and officers arrested him on a charge of capital murder. He remains held in the Travis County Jail without bond.
