Ohio man who fatally strangled ex-girlfriend during senior trip in Myrtle Beach is sentenced

CONWAY, S.C. (TCN) — A 20-year-old Ohio man will spend over four decades behind bars for killing his 18-year-old ex-girlfriend during a trip to South Carolina after she allegedly texted another boy.

According to the 15th Judicial Circuit Solicitor’s Office, on March 3, Blake Linkous pleaded guilty to murder in connection with the death of Natalie Martin. A judge sentenced him to 45 years in prison without the possibility of parole.

On June 6, 2023, Linkous and others from his hometown, including his ex-girlfriend Martin, traveled to Myrtle Beach for a senior trip following high school graduation. Martin and Linkous reportedly broke off their relationship a few months prior after Linkous allegedly shoved the victim during an argument.

According to WMBF-TV, Linkous fatally strangled Martin in a hotel room on Maison Drive during the senior getaway. A group of students reportedly found Martin on the bedroom floor and called law enforcement.

The solicitor’s office announced in late June 2023 that Linkous’ bond was set at $150,000. Martin’s father, Jesse Martin, reportedly explained in court that their family wasn’t happy the defendant was granted bond.

In a statement obtained by WMBF, the father said, “You know, if you want to do what’s right, it’s 635 days of my daughter’s murderer out running around in Ohio. I don’t know what the people of Horry County think, but that doesn’t –– that doesn’t matter. That doesn’t matter, Your Honor.”

Scott Hixson, the chief deputy solicitor, said, “The evidence showed he was a very controlling, insecure, and jealous person,” and added, “Although they were broken up and agreed to see other people, he became mad at her for texting another boy.”
