South Dakota man sentenced for stabbing teen to death in bathroom
PIERRE, S.D. (TCN) — A 25-year-old man will spend the rest of his life behind bars for fatally stabbing a female teenager in a bathroom nearly two years ago.
The South Dakota Attorney General’s Office said in a July 15 news release that David Shangreaux Jr. received life in prison without the possibility of parole in connection with the death of 17-year-old Evie Maxey. A jury previously convicted him in April of second-degree murder.
According to the initial affidavit of probable cause, on Nov. 30, 2023, Pierre Police responded to a report of an “intoxicated male causing a disturbance by running between the apartment building and a vehicle in the parking lot being loud.”
At the scene, responding officers made contact with Shangreaux, who denied causing a disturbance and said it was probably his wife. The defendant reportedly went to get his wife but came back to the door alone. Police allege Shangreaux had blood on his hands, and they subsequently detained him.
When officers searched the apartment for the defendant’s wife, they reportedly found an unresponsive and bloody female in the apartment bathroom. Emergency medical services personnel pronounced her deceased.
According to the affidavit, witnesses reported that they heard loud music, banging noises, and a scream coming from the apartment. Investigators later learned Shangreaux lived in the unit with his girlfriend, identified in court documents as “L.G.”
L.G. reportedly told authorities she was in the apartment with her boyfriend and Maxey when the defendant became intoxicated and “began acting aggressively by threatening” Maxey with a knife. L.G. allegedly left the home and last knew Maxey was in the bathroom with Shangreaux.
According to police, Shangreaux admitted to police that he stabbed Maxey in the bathroom “during a confrontation.”
South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley said, “Our hearts go out to Evie’s family. While this sentence cannot bring Evie back, justice has been served.”
