10 Years of Our Lady’s Protection: Washington Chapel Celebrates with Hungarian Mass

The Chapel of Our Lady of Hungary in Washington is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, and to mark the occasion, the Embassy of Hungary in Washington D.C. organized a Hungarian Mass celebrated by Dr. Kornél Fábry, Auxiliary Bishop of Esztergom-Budapest Archdiocese.

The bishop celebrated the Hungarian Mass in the crypt of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, which houses the Chapel of Our Lady of Hungary. Dr. Pál Péter Schmitt, First Secretary of the Hungarian Embassy in Washington, gave a welcoming speech at the event, followed by a concert by organist Áron Dóbisz and trumpeter Bence János Samodai, who performed Hungarian church, classical and contemporary pieces.

The festive event was made possible with the support of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, the Hungarian Catholic Bishops’ Conference, and the St. Stephen Catholic Hungarian Community in Washington.

The Chapel of Our Lady of Hungary is located in Washington, D.C., in the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. This imposing church is home to numerous national chapels representing the various peoples and communities living in the United States.

The Hungarian chapel is a symbol of the relationship between the Hungarian people and the American Catholic community. At its consecration, Cardinal Péter Erdő, Archbishop of the Esztergom-Budapest Archdiocese emphasized that this chapel expresses the gratitude of the Hungarian people and the unity that exists between Hungarians in Hungary and those in the United States.

The altar is a smaller replica of the altar in St. Stephen’s Basilica in Budapest. In addition to the figure of the Virgin Mary, the chapel also features statues of six Hungarian saints: Queen Gisela of Hungary, Saint Emeric of Hungary, King Ladislaus of Hungary, Saint Elisabeth of Hungary, Saint Margaret of Hungary, and Saint Gerard of Csanád (Gerard Sagredo).

For 10 years, the chapel has been a symbol of Hungarian faith, unity, and gratitude in the capital of the United States.
