12-Year-Old Hungarian Surfer Shines in Shortboard Competition

On the Costa da Caparica, near Lisbon, Portugal, a 12-year-old Hungarian boy recently achieved amazing things when he won bronze against adult men in the shortboard competition, an Olympic event, at the Hungarian Surf Fest, as Index reports.

The portal has learned that Noel Cser began his schooling in Hungary and has been living with his family in Tenerife, the largest of the Canary Islands, which belongs to Spain, for the past five years. It seems unsurprising that he soon picked up a surfboard in such a coastal environment.

“We live in a very windy place, thus my father started windsurfing here, and I have always seen lots of surfers on the water. I liked the sport straight away and we started within about six months,” he recalled.

Following his current success in the shortboard competition, he cited international competitions and perhaps an Olympic qualification as long-term goals, but at the moment he just wants to have fun surfing, he explained in an interview with Index.

Despite his young age, the Hungarian Surf Fest 2024 was already his third surfing competition, but only his first in the adult category.

Nevertheless, the boy surprised everyone with his amazing technique and daring tricks.

In the first round, he managed to sneak past Szabolcs Bencze (4.37 points) into second place with a sensational slide (3.07 points) and in the new round he impressed with an amazing wave ride (he finished 7.80 points behind the final winner Zoltán Bakró (11.96). However, he experienced the real highlight in the semi-final when he overtook Dávid Liptay (3.10), who was still in the race, and Lotfi Peiman (2.90), who was in third place at the time, with 2.00 points before the end and reached the final with an overall score of 3.73 behind Csaba Pinczés (4.83).

Results of the men’s Hungarian Surf Fest 2024:

  • Zoltán Bakró 8.77 points
  • Csaba Pinczés 5.13
  • Noel Cser 4.47
  • Zsolt Diószegi 3.90

The Hungarian Surf Fest unites the Hungarian surfing community in an annual event and is not just a surfing competition, but also a community event, according to the website. The aim is to provide a platform for up-and-coming Hungarian surfers and to make this event the official Hungarian surfing championships, which can serve as a qualifying event for the World Surfing Games.
