ZF Chassis Modules, a world-leading German automotive supplier, is investing ten billion forints (26 million euros; 1 euro = 385 forints) to create 230 new jobs in Debrecen, further strengthening the Hungarian automotive industry, announced Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, on Tuesday in Debrecen (eastern Hungary).
The minister announced that ZF Chassis Modules Hungary Kft., the German automotive supplier will manufacture front and rear axles exclusively for electric vehicles produced at the BMW plant in Debrecen as part of a ten billion forint development project.
The state supported the project with approximately one billion forints, helping to create 230 new jobs.
In his speech, he emphasized that the plant will use state-of-the-art machinery and, importantly, will run exclusively on green energy.
Every single axle produced here will be installed in the most modern cars at the BMW plant in Debrecen, just a few minutes away,”
he said.
He went on to explain that the arrival of BMW marked a real turning point in the city’s history, providing excellent development opportunities for local companies and attracting world-leading high-tech companies, thus creating hundreds of new jobs that will enable local young people to stay in the area.
He added that the current investment will further strengthen the domestic automotive industry, in whose development Debrecen has also played a key role over the past decade, when the sector’s production value more than quadrupled, reaching 13,000 billion forints last year.
Péter Szijjártó then stated that
Debrecen was one of the main beneficiaries of the sovereign national economic policy of the past decade and a half, with two of the three largest investments ever made in Hungary taking place there at the same time.
He noted that over the past ten years, the government has supported 101 large-scale corporate investments in the city worth approximately 600 billion forints, which has induced 4,600 billion forints in investments and created 23,000 new jobs.
“It is perhaps no exaggeration to say that Debrecen has become one of the centers of the modern global automotive industry. In recent years, more than 100 billion forints has been spent on infrastructure renewal in Debrecen, with roads and bicycle paths being built, railway lines being created, and educational and environmental developments taking place,” he said.
He also recalled that ten to fifteen years ago, the Hungarian government set itself the goal of eliminating the development gap between the eastern and western parts of the country, which it has now achieved despite extremely unfavorable external circumstances.
“Despite the nearby war, we can be proud that we have achieved one of the most significant economic successes of the past ten to fifteen years by eliminating the painful development gap that previously existed between the eastern and western parts of the country,” he said, pointing out that this would not have been possible without Debrecen.
