The 40th edition of the SPAR Budapest Marathon Festival has officially broken all previous participation records in Hungarian sports history, with a staggering 40,219 people registering for one of the weekend’s races. Organizers announced that Sunday’s events are completely sold out, making this year’s festival the largest mass sports event ever held in Hungary.
The registration for Sunday’s races is now closed due to overwhelming demand, though late sign-ups are still possible for the shorter Saturday events. The two-day festival has set a new benchmark in Hungary’s recreational sports scene. Previously, the highest attendance stood at 33,500 participants—this year’s turnout has opened a “new dimension,” as organizers put it.
We are incredibly proud and happy. When we saw the final pre-registration numbers, it felt like a dream we have had for over a decade had finally come true. ‘40,000 for the 40th’ is more than just a slogan—it is a shared achievement with the Hungarian running community,”
said Árpád Kocsis, CEO of Budapest Sportiroda.
This historic record is a testament to their trust and passion built over decades. We are grateful to every single participant, the city of Budapest, our partners, and our title sponsor SPAR, who has supported the event for 17 years. We cannot wait to celebrate this sporting milestone together as one big community this weekend.”
The event caters to all ages and fitness levels, offering everything from family-friendly fun runs to 10K races and the classic full marathon.
As per tradition, the race center, start, and finish line will be located along Pázmány Péter Promenade near the ELTE Lágymányos Campus, with runners once again traversing a spectacular route that passes by some of Budapest’s UNESCO World Heritage sites, showcasing the most scenic parts of the Hungarian capital.
