Europe should take decisive steps to prevent even more serious migration-related incidents, György Bakondi, the Prime Minister’s chief advisor on homeland security told Kossuth Radio’s Good Morning, Hungary! program on Thursday.
The chief advisor recalled that recent events in major European cities involving migrants – including pro-Hamas demonstrations – show that illegal immigrants are getting into increasingly open and violent confrontations with the state authorities.
By doing so, immigrants are also expressing their attitude towards the legal order, the state authorities and the population of the receiving countries,”
he added.
There is no integration on their part, he said, noting that there is an increasing number of incidents linked to crime and terrorism. Referring to the European Parliament elections in June, he said he hoped that these events, with their serious consequences, might “lead to a turnaround in decision-making at European level” this year.
György Bakondi said that at the level of nation states,
the Hungarian position is increasingly being accepted,”
namely that arriving migrants should be screened outside the borders of the European Union and only those who are granted refugee status by the authorities on the basis of legal provisions should be admitted. At the same time, he added, member states are taking the majority position in front of the broad plenary. “They are hoping to find loopholes to prevent further influxes of migrants,” he said, referring to the recently agreed EU migration pact.

He also pointed to the growing number of member states that are part of the Schengen area and have reintroduced border controls. These states consider that the number of migrants arriving and the danger they pose to society require decisive action to prevent their entry.
He stressed that
the proportion of illegal immigrants who have been expelled from an EU country but not enforced is over 80 percent.
György Bakondi also said that the increased police presence had led to a significant decrease in the number of illegal border crossing attempts at the Serbian-Hungarian border. Joint border controls on the Romanian-Hungarian border are also effective, and recently a group of 140 immigrants traveling in a truck was intercepted, he said.
The chief advisor pointed out on the M1 news channel that
a further significant wave of migration is expected in 2024, due to the crisis in the Sahel and attacks by Hamas in Israel, among other factors.
