Airbnb Ban Takes Effect in Budapest’s Terézváros as Authorities Begin Inspections

Oktogon, one of Budapest’s busiest intersections in District 6, where Andrássy Avenue meets the Grand Boulevard

The Airbnb ban came into effect on January 1st, 2026, in Budapest’s 6th district, and the Terézváros local government began inspecting accommodations during the first week of the year, Turizmus.com reported.

The local government is conducting the inspections in cooperation with the police and the National Tax and Customs Administration.

Those who illegally rent out their accommodations can expect fines of several million forints.

Terézváros wrote the following in a Facebook post:

“After fourteen months of preparation, based on the decision of the residents, from January 1, 2026, short-term accommodation services (Airbnb) will be prohibited in private and other non-hotel accommodation types in our district. Only hotels, guesthouses, and community accommodations can operate legally. Together with partner agencies, such as the National Tax and Customs Administration and the police, we are already continuously monitoring accommodation facilities, and fines of up to several million forints may be imposed on operators of illegal accommodation facilities.”

The Terézváros local government passed a decree banning short-term apartment rentals after this option was accepted in a vote among district residents.

In the summer of 2025, the Budapest government office headed by Botond Sára called on the district to withdraw the measure, but Mayor Tamás Soproni rejected this. The Supreme Court ruled on the legality of the ban and found that the Terézváros Airbnb decree was lawful.
