Airport to Open for Sport Aircraft and Business Travelers in Miskolc

The Miskolc City Airport has received the establishment permit for the construction of a new, special civil airport in Miskolc (northeastern Hungary), Fidesz MP Katalin Csöbör announced at a press conference in the county seat on Wednesday.
She said the airport would be the “old airport,” currently used by Bosch. The facility has survived war, communism and regime change, but the cooperation and lease agreement expired in 2019, she explained. Katalin Csöbör was approached earlier by László Drótos, a representative of Miskolc City Airport, to find an area where they could fly without disturbing the population and where sport pilots could “find their own space.”
László Drótos, representative of the operator, said,
the facility will be primarily a sports airport, which will also be able to welcome business jets, investors and official visitors. With the new airport, they also want to involve young people in sport flying, glider and parachute training.
He noted that they were also thinking of organizing events, thus in the future they would host sporting and cultural programs. He said it was a very important feature of the airport that it was easily accessible from two directions and that its location would not disturb the residents.
László Drótos added that the project was a private initiative “put together and created from the money and work of dedicated pilots,” and that the operation of the project would be handed over to the Hungarian Reservists’ Association (MATASZ). He stressed that they do not see the opportunity primarily as a business, but rather as a community space.
In response to a journalist’s question, László Drótos said that the facility has so far cost around HUF 200 million (EUR 490,000) to rebuild and has a grass runway for the time being. He noted that work is currently underway on the area, and that the airport is scheduled to open in the spring.
