Albanian President Welcomed in Budapest for Official State Visit

Hungarian President Tamás Sulyok welcomed Albanian President Bajram Begaj in Budapest on Tuesday, reaffirming Hungary’s commitment to deepening political, economic, cultural, and educational ties with Albania. The two heads of state met at the Sándor Palace during Bajram Begaj’s official visit to Hungary.

Speaking to the press following their talks, President Sulyok emphasized the shared views between the two countries on issues related to border security, national sovereignty, and identity.

Hungary seeks friendly relations and stable partnerships with all countries in the Western Balkans,” President Sulyok stated, adding that the region remains a cornerstone of Europe’s stability and security.

The Hungarian president highlighted Albania’s role as a NATO ally since 2009, underlining the two nations’ joint efforts toward ensuring collective security. He also expressed his best wishes for the 2027 NATO summit, set to be hosted in Tirana.

President Sulyok reiterated Hungary’s firm support for Albania’s aspirations to join the European Union, noting that Albania has always been able to count on Hungary’s backing—and will continue to do so.

Encouraged by the recent momentum in Albania’s accession process, President Sulyok pointed out that the opening of the first negotiating cluster coincided with Hungary’s presidency of the Council of the European Union.

He also welcomed Albania’s recent accession to the Three Seas Initiative, a regional forum aimed at strengthening political and economic cooperation among Central European countries stretching from the Baltic to the Adriatic and Black Seas.

I am proud that our countries have developed increasingly close cooperation in recent years,” President Sulyok remarked, expressing hope for the continued strengthening of bilateral relations.

President Sulyok concluded by thanking President Begaj for his invitation to visit Albania—which he accepted.
