American Tourism in Hungary Set to Surge with Resumed Direct Flights

The number of American tourists is rapidly increasing: they spend much more and stay longer than other travelers, the Oeconomus Economic Research Foundation pointed out.

One of the benefits of the spectacular improvement in U.S.-Hungarian relations is that the number of American tourists in Hungary may continue to rise. The United States is an important and stable source market for travelers visiting the country, with hundreds of thousands of tourists arriving each year.

In recent years, with a few exceptions, the United States has been the 13th most important source market for inbound tourism to Hungary.

However, there is still enormous potential in American tourism. At the end of the 2010s, when direct flights were available, the number of arrivals approached 700,000. In 2024, in the post-coronavirus pandemic period, despite the absence of direct flights, arrivals still rose to 480,000.

The resumption of flights between the two countries was also an important topic at the meeting between Donald Trump and Viktor Orbán in November 2025. With the reopening of direct flights, a significant increase in the number of American tourists is expected, who spend significantly more and stay longer than other travelers:

  • American tourists still spent more than twice as much time in Hungary as the average foreign tourist, generally 5.6 days compared to 2.3 days.
  • Americans’ spending was 1.7 times the international average

With the spectacular improvement in U.S.-Hungarian relations, the development of tourism and the resumption of direct flights between the two countries have come to the fore. After the U.S.-Hungarian bilateral meeting, Minister of National Economy Márton Nagy reported that flights between Budapest and New York may return to the schedule. The Minister for National Economy emphasized: “Our goal is shared: to further strengthen U.S.-Hungarian relations and attract even more American tourists to Hungary.”

In August 2025, American Airlines announced that it would resume direct flights between Hungary and the U.S. in May 2026, on another previously operated route, the Budapest-Philadelphia connection.

The tourism sector plays a significant role in the Hungarian economy. In 2024, tourism was the sector that stimulated growth the most. The sector accounts for nearly 13% of GDP and provides employment for hundreds of thousands of people.

Another important factor for tourism in the United States and Hungary is that, as of September 30 this year, all Hungarian citizens can once again travel to the United States without a visa.
