Another Power Plant Receives Increased Military Protection

The Hungarian Defense Forces’ Joint Operations Command reported on Monday at a press conference held at the power plant in northern Hungary that the military had reinforced the protection of critical energy infrastructure at the Mátravidék Power Plant.

Major General László Antal announced that soldiers from the Hungarian Defense Forces’ Budapest Garrison Brigade, led by Sándor Szurmai, are providing 24-hour security and protection at the Mátravidék Power Plant in Lőrinci.

He recalled that

on February 25, the government decided to strengthen Hungary’s infrastructure and energy facilities and to increase security and protection.

The decision was published in the Government Decree 30/2026 on February 27.

He said that this task is currently being carried out at 75 locations. Their tasks include security, patrolling, and drone protection.

In addition to the designated units of the Hungarian Defense Forces, the Ministry of the Interior, local governments, various government organizations, and security companies providing security for infrastructure are cooperating in the implementation of this duty.

The Hungarian Defense Forces’ task force includes

  • land forces,
  • air forces,
  • special operations forces,
  • as well as professional and contract personnel from territorial defense regiments.

László Antal emphasized that in Lőrinci, as in other locations, cooperation with the energy supplier is good, communication and information flow are continuous, and thanks to this, task execution and energy supply security have been resolved.

Fact

On February 25, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán announced after a meeting of the Defense Council that he had ordered the strengthening of the protection of critical energy infrastructure due to concerns of potential Ukrainian sabotage. Soldiers and the necessary equipment to repel attacks will also be deployed near key energy facilities.

The police are patrolling the areas around designated power plants, distribution stations, and control centers with increased forces. A ban on drone flights has been imposed in Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County.
