Armenia Perceived a “Friendly Country” in Hungary, Says President Sulyok

President Tamás Sulyok, while in Doha on a working visit as part of the Second UN Conference on Social Development, met with his Armenian counterpart Vahagn Khachaturyan.

The Republic of Armenia is an important partner for Hungary in the South Caucasus region, the head of state noted in a post on X. He expressed his conviction that

shared values such as Christianity and our cultural heritage, as well as our commitment to international peace and regional stability, form a solid basis for the development of our cooperation.”

The heads of state agreed that national identity and sovereignty are of paramount importance to Hungary and Armenia and are worth debating.

During the meeting, possible ways to strengthen relations between Armenia and Hungary were discussed.

The parties highlighted practical cooperation in the fields of aviation and pharmaceuticals, and emphasized the need to further strengthen economic cooperation.

The presidents also emphasized the crucial role of the Armenian community in Hungary in strengthening relations between the two countries. Tamás Sulyok noted that

Armenia is perceived as a friendly country thanks to the active work of the Armenian community in Hungary.

President Vahagn Khachaturyan praised the respectful and inclusive policy of the Hungarian authorities towards Hungarian Armenians and national minorities in general. Both sides emphasized the continuity of mutual visits and high-level meetings, which give new impetus to business cooperation and deepen mutual understanding between the two nations.

Fact

The two countries decided in December 2022 to resume diplomatic relations after a ten-year hiatus. In May 2023, the reactivation of embassies was agreed upon. President Khachaturyan visited Hungary in early February 2024. The country supports Armenia’s cooperation with the EU, visa liberalization, and the implementation of the partnership agenda. In addition, Hungary provides humanitarian aid to Armenian families from Nagorno-Karabakh and offers scholarships to 30 Armenian students. Bilateral economic relations are flourishing, with record trade turnover last year.
