On Friday, Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó inaugurated a significant capacity expansion at packaging specialist Marzek Kner Packaging Kft. in Békéscsaba (southern Hungary). The investment not only strengthens the company’s export power, but is also considered a prime example of the economic dynamism in southeastern Hungary.
Austrian packaging manufacturer Marzek Kner has invested heavily in its Békéscsaba site in recent years. With a total volume of 5.5 billion forints (14 million euros), production has been modernized and expanded. The Hungarian government supported the project with a subsidy of 1.5 billion forints (3.9 million euros). In FM Péter Szijjártó’s view, this step secures the jobs of 480 employees in the long term.
The expansion focuses on the production of environmentally friendly, paper-based packaging.
In his speech, the minister emphasized that the company is thus in tune with the spirit of the times. “This investment will enable the company to further increase its export quota while reducing energy consumption and waste,” he explained.
More than half of the products manufactured in Békéscsaba are destined for the global market.
The company thus combines over 140 years of printing tradition in the region with state-of-the-art sustainability standards and specialized manufacturing.
The inauguration also provided an opportunity to take stock of regional economic development. Péter Szijjártó emphasized that the former development gap between western and eastern Hungary was increasingly being overcome.
The government’s new strategic priority is now to promote the south, with Békés County playing a key role.
Since 2014, industrial production in Békés County has almost doubled from 450 billion forints to 830 billion forints (from 1.2 billion euros to 2.1 million euros). The unemployment rate in the region fell from ten to just under five percent within a decade. Over the past ten years, 49 large-scale investments with a total value of 422 billion forints (1 billion euros) have been realized in the county with state support.
In conclusion, the minister praised the close economic ties with neighboring Austria. Austrian companies currently employ around 75,000 people in Hungary. In the last decade alone, the Hungarian government has provided financial support for 68 major Austrian projects, underscoring the importance of cross-border partnerships for Hungary as a business location.
