Dávid Betlehem in the 10 km race at the 2024 Olympics
Hungarian open water swimmers had a mixed weekend at the World Cup in Portugal. Dávid Betlehem beat Frenchman Logan Fontaine in a photo finish with a fantastic sprint on Sunday in the final of the three kilometer knockout race. The other members of the national team, including Olympic champion Kristóf Rasovszky and European champion Viktória Mihályvári-Farkas, were unable to make it onto the podium this time.
Sunday’s knockout race final (a tournament style race across three rounds, beginning with 1500m, then 1000m, and finishing with 500m, with 10 minutes in between distances) was an extremely close contest, with Betlehem emerging victorious, beating France’s Logan Fontaine by centimeters.
According to the World Aquatics report,
the sprint race was extremely close, with the finish line decided by a photo finish.
Kristóf Rasovszky, who missed out on the podium this time, finished fifth after completing his third 10-kilometer race in three weeks.
The classic 10-kilometer open water race took place a day earlier, on Saturday, where Rasovszky, who boasts Olympic, world, and European championship titles, finished in fifth place. The race was particularly challenging for the field, as the final lap was a fierce battle in places. The Hungarian Swimming Association emphasized that the end of the race was even more competitive than usual,” therefore none of the Hungarian swimmers managed to finish on the podium in this distance.
In the 10 km distance, Dávid Betlehem also kept pace with the leaders throughout, while Rasovszky often led the field. After the race, Rasovszky said that
this was their third long-distance race in three weeks – after the European Championships and the national championships – hence he no longer felt the freshness he had at the continental competition.
In the women’s event, Viktória Mihályvári-Farkas, who previously won a gold medal at the European Championships, finished fourth this time, while Bettina Fábián, who is still struggling with a rib injury, was unable to compete at the front of the field, finishing 10th. The two Hungarian swimmers withdrew from Sunday’s sprint competition.
