BME Holds World Record for Successful Small Satellite Launches

The small satellite Hunity, as part of the sixth student satellite mission of the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME), has successfully reached its orbit. The satellite carried a variety of scientific instruments and experiments into space.

On Friday evening, Hunity was launched as part of the Transporter-15 mission, a small satellite developed in cooperation between the Microwave Remote Sensing Laboratory and the university’s Radio Club, with the National Media and Infocommunications Authority (NMHH) as the main partner.

The sixth student satellite from the BME was launched by a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from the Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, along with about 100 other satellites.

The first signals from Hunity were received on Saturday at the development team’s ground station.

One of the novelties of the 5x5x15 cm, 868-gram satellite is that it has solar panels that can be opened to provide more energy. Another is that an experimental panel designed by high school students has been placed on another unit that can also be opened, they said.

Hunity carried a number of scientific instruments and experiments, a high-resolution on-board camera, and a magnetic and motorized position stabilization system into space as useful payloads.

In addition, several types of solar panels will be tested in space.

Continuing the collaboration between universities, four experimental panels developed by the development team at Széchenyi István University in Győr are also on board.

Moreover, six experimental panels developed by high school student teams formed from last year’s Cansat Hungary competition finalists were placed on the opening side.

The satellite communicates on the amateur radio band, with the primary ground control station located on the roof of Building E of the BME and the secondary station located in Érd, near Budapest.

With this successful launch, the university’s development team now has the most successful PocketQube-category satellite missions in the world.
