Breakthrough in Budapest: The Darts Trophy Goes to Germany

Germany’s Niko Springer captured the first professional title of his career by winning the Hungarian Darts Trophy on Sunday night at the MVM Dome in Budapest, delivering a stunning performance throughout the tournament.

The 25-year-old shocked the field by defeating several top contenders, including world number one Luke Humphries, en route to lifting the trophy.

Sunday’s action began with early upsets, as Danny Noppert edged fellow Dutchman Michael van Gerwen 6–5, while Gerwyn Price of Wales cruised past Raymond van Barneveld. However, Price later withdrew from his quarterfinal match, granting Luke Littler a buy into the semifinals.

Niko Springer made the most of his opportunity in the afternoon session, eliminating Rob Cross 6–3 after the Englishman delivered a lackluster performance.

But it was the evening showdown between Springer and Humphries that stole the spotlight. Both players averaged over 100 points per turn, but the German held his nerve to clinch a thrilling 6–4 win with a strong finish.

In the semifinal, Springer narrowly defeated Josh Rock of Northern Ireland 7–6 in a high-pressure contest. He then went on to edge Danny Noppert 8–7 in a dramatic final to secure the championship.

Hungarian participants Norbert Prés, András Borbély, Nándor Major, and Levente Sárai exited the competition during Friday’s opening rounds.
