Brussels Failed in Every Major Crisis, Says Foreign Minister

Brussels has responded badly and dangerously to the crises of recent years, without exception, while Hungary has given the right answers, said Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, on Wednesday in Belgrade.

The minister first spoke about the crises of recent years at the Central European Initiative meeting, pointing out that Brussels had taken unsuccessful measures in response to illegal immigration, the coronavirus pandemic, and the war in Ukraine.

He complained that the European Union is focusing on managing migration rather than stopping it, even though its negative effects are already clearly visible in the western part of the continent.

In his words, equally bad measures were adopted during the pandemic.

Surely everyone remembers that many people in Europe waited for vaccines, which they obtained through secret text messages, while millions of lives were put at risk by harsh propaganda against countries that were willing to look for alternative sources,”

he said.

“And now we are faced with the complete failure of the European strategy on war, which ultimately globalized the war instead of isolating it. Weapons and billions of euros were sent to a war that has no military solution (…) Everyone around the table said that anyone who talked about a ceasefire and peace negotiations was a traitor. Now everyone is talking about a ceasefire and peace negotiations,” he pointed out.

“So we have three major challenges behind us, and three failures in Europe’s response to them. But now we have a historic opportunity to end a war that is taking place in our neighborhood and for which we are all paying the price, even though we bear no responsibility for it,” he emphasized.

FM Péter Szijjártó expressed his hope that the willingness to accept the new peace plan will now be stronger than the efforts of those who want to prevent it.

“Because the situation is getting worse with every day spent at war. People are dying every day. Day by day, destruction is taking place, and day by day, the risk of escalation is growing,” he said. – he listed.

He explained that while Budapest had been designated as the venue for a possible peace summit, the European Union had become politically isolated in recent years, which had also led to a decline in competitiveness.

He recalled the extremely unfavorable European-American customs agreement, the ineffective and harmful sanctions against Russia, and the fact that China had previously been declared a systemic rival in Brussels.

In this context, he drew attention to the danger of the world becoming divided into blocs again and reported that this region would be one of the biggest losers, as was the case during the Cold War.

We know what it feels like to be oppressed from the east and neglected from the west for four decades. So we Hungarians do not want to return to an era when the world is divided into blocs; instead, we support connectivity,”

the minister stated.

He also touched on the importance of mutual respect and emphasized that enough was enough with lectures, interference in each other’s internal affairs, and some people thinking they know better what is good for another country.

“I hope that Central European cooperation will be free from interference in each other’s internal affairs and free from commenting on each other’s domestic political issues. And I am confident that mutual respect will return to Central European cooperation,” he concluded.
